Tik-Tok Influencer Remi Bader’s Horse Ranch Incident Has a Darker Meaning

By: Andruw Lin

Recently, Remi Bader was fat-shamed at Deep Hollow Ranch by employees. They laughed at her and one of them even posted a video fat-shaming her. Sadly, this is a common experience for obese people in America. It makes their weight struggle even harder. People who have a weight problem should not be reminded of it by others that are not their physicians. The CDC found that “41.9% of adult Americans are obese, with 1 in 5 Americans aged 2 to 19 being classified as obese.”

Fat-shaming is harmful to the person, and people are commonly misguided that fat-shaming is a motivation for weight loss. Fat-shaming can lead to behavior changes that might lead to weight gain, including binge eating disorders. This means that the more an obese person is shamed, the more weight they can gain, and it becomes a cycle. Dr. Hasan Merali, a public health specialist, argues that “When fat-shaming turns into weight-based discrimination, it’s associated with low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and eating disorders.”

Another way that weight gain can happen after fat-shaming is decreased physical activity. If a person is fat-shamed, the stigma associated with obesity can lead to decreased ranch guidelines that horses can’t bear more than 20% of their weight was acceptable, the attitude of the workers of the ranch was unacceptable, said Remi.
