People Have to Stop Fat-Shaming

By: Kobe Cheng

On June 11th, a 26-year-old curve model with over 2 million followers on TikTok, Remi

Bader said the Deep Hollow Ranch in Montauk told her to leave because she weighed over 240

pounds. After that, she also claimed she was laughed at by someone working on the ranch. One

employee also posted an inappropriate TikTok about Bader in which the employee says

profanities about her. Fat-shaming must stop – and here’s why.

Fat-shaming has been a problem in the United States that has been going around for

decades. Obesity among Americans grew more than 10 percentage points over the past 20

years, according to the latest statistics from 2017-2020 from the Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention. The CDC found that 41.9% of adult Americans are obese, with 1 in 5

Americans aged 2 to 19 are classified as obese.

Due to fat-shaming, people have been treated differently, and even denied access to

services or entertainment. People who are obese know they have a weight problem and do not

need to be reminded of it. Those who think they are being helpful and justify fat-shaming as a

means of motivation for weight loss are completely misguided. The only person who should be

giving advice is their physician so that they can work together to address it.

Over 40% of American adults report experiences with weight-based teasing, and this

poor treatment worsens the health problems they face. When fat-shaming turns into

discrimination, it’s associated with anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders.

The more discrimination obese people face, the more weight they often gain. This very serious

medical condition causes individuals to eat large amounts of food without being able to stop.

In conclusion, the health problems, and they hate that they face should stop people from

fat-shaming. All this does is push obese people away from activities that they may love and

contribute to a number of health consequences. Don’t make fun of anybody whatever shape, or color they come in.
