Neutrino Particles Could Help With New Discoveries About Space

By: Jenna Zhang

Neutrinos are subatomic particles that don’t have electric charge and have a small mass. They are also known as “ghost particles” because they can smoothly pass through dust, gas, and even stars without a trace.

Neutrinos particles that have high energy dart throughout the universe. While doing so, these particles carry information about distant places in the cosmos. However, scientists recently found out where the ghost particles came from.

Researchers found signs of high-energy neutrinos particles coming from within the Milky Way. They mapped the particles, making it the first map of our galaxy that shows something other than light.

This map helps give clues to where high-energy neutrinos come from. Some say that the source of these particles could be the remains of supernovas or come from the cores of unidentified objects in space.

On June 30th, the map was revealed.

In the past, scientists have only traced a few high-energy neutrinos particle’s birthplace. These neutrinos all come from outside of the Milky Way. Two particles came from black holes, while others came from blazars.

Kate Scolberg, a physicist at Duke University in Durham, N.C., says that researchers are discovering neutrinos particles inside and outside our galaxy. These particles will help us see objects in space better than telescopes.
