New Family Robots are Starting to Enter Homes

By: Andy Dong

In the US by 2033, these new AI robots could potentially take on some of the household chores to make living full of convenience and connectivity.

Scientists and engineers are teaming up to continue researching and building little robots whose purpose is to help around and provide companionship. These robots can talk, move around, and even play games. In the next decade, they are expected to do 40% of all household chores. This includes caring for loved ones, cooking, and cleaning the house.

In the past, many people have long dreamed of robot assistants that can take care of all the housework, leaving them to enjoy life. Many movies like WALL-E have portrayed robots doing all the work for humans. Much research has been done in this field for many years; some chore robots already exist, and even therapy robots have been developed. Floor-cleaning machines and animated robots can already be found in houses.

“A growing body of research on companion robots suggests they can reduce stress and loneliness and can help older people remain healthy and active in their homes,” Duke Today claimed after it had done various studies on the topic. Elderly people are all over these new robots since the robots can help them deal with loneliness and help with health by giving reminders and encouraging the elderly.

Another possibility that many support is that house robots could help gender equality, since housework can prevent a woman from doing her work, getting promotions, and earning more money. Studies show that 91% of women with kids do at least 1-2 hours a day doing housework. Compared to the 30% of men that actually do any of the housework. Families spend a lot of time doing work that they don’t get paid for, which mostly comes from housework. Lifting this burden would result in more time for other tasks.
