In many parts of Kentucky, firefighters and other authority figures are helping the citizens have been victims to days of flash flooding. Other communities have been sending help; for example, the town of Breman, which was subjected to one of the worst tornados last year, sent trucks of food and supplies to the town of Hindman, where flash flooding has been especially heavy.

Officials state that at least 26 people have died from the floods, but, the numbers aren’t fixed, as everyone is still recovering from the mess. It could take a long time for the locals to fully recuperate from the devastating damage from the floods.

“I wish I could tell you why we keep getting hit here in Kentucky,” Governor Andy Beshear said “I wish I could tell you why areas where people may not have much continue to get hit and lose everything, I can’t give you the why, but I know what we do in response to it. And the answer is everything we can.”

The state of Kentucky has endured much in the past few years: there was the storm that cut off the power to 150,000 people last year, a flash flood last July, and a tornado in December which killed 80 people.

Nathan Day, a coal miner in Hindman, was oblivious of the flooding until he received a message asking him to help.

“I didn’t know what they was talking about, then I went outside,” Day said. “You heard a lot of people screaming and begging for anyone to help.”

Together, Day and his wife rescued 5 children and their 2 mothers who were stuck on the roof. Afterwards, Day rescued his high school English teacher and his second grade teacher, then reunited them with their families.

“It was heartbreaking.” said Day
