A 3D Scan of a Legendary Ship

By: Derrick Chen

Over 12,000 feet under the ocean lies the wreck of the RMS Titanic, the famous ship that sank between April 14th and 15th in 1912. The remains of the Titanic have now been scanned by Magellan Ltd to get a 3D scan of the remains of the legendary sunken ship. After 200 hours and over 700,000 photos, the company was able to make a 3D model of the wreck deep below the ocean’s surface.

Many people remain fascinated by the sinking of the Titanic. For years people have wondered what exactly happened to it. Hopefully, we can now get a better understanding of this new 3D model.

The RMS Titanic was considered to be an “Unsinkable” passenger ship. It left England on April 12, 1912, for New York. On April 14, the Titanic hit an iceberg. The ship had sixteen compartments at the bottom used to hold water if there was a leak. four compartments could hold, but not five. As more water poured into the compartments, it became clear that the ship was sinking. Most passengers didn’t believe that the ship was sinking. When the water started pouring into the rooms, people realized the situation and got onto the deck. People were lowered into lifeboats, women and children first. As some people managed to escape, some didn’t. The Titanic broke into two pieces and slowly sank under the sea. Of 2240 passengers and crew, only about 700 survived.

This new model allows us to have a much greater understanding of exactly what happened on April 14th and 15th, 1912. We can better understand how the Titanic, thought to be “unsinkable”, sank. We can use this knowledge to help build ships that are even more “unsinkable” than the Titanic, which was thought to be “unsinkable” itself.
