Scientists found a new way to detect indoor air pollution was recently found, and it may very well surprise you. Researchers at the University of Turku in Finland have used genetically modified nematodes (roundworms) that light up when exposed to biologically or chemically toxic materials.

The team found out that the worms glowed a fluorescent green when exposed to household toxins like black mold, as well as the harsh chemicals in cleaning solutions. The intensity of the light depends on the concentration of toxic substances.

Previously, worms have been used to detect things like heavy metals in the environment, but this is the first time they were used to detect indoor air pollution. This truly was an amazing and unexpected discovery.
