A Runaway Turtle’s Journey

By: Erice Zhang

A turtle made a runaway to the train station on July,16, 2024. The owner accidentally let it out of the cage and ran to the train station. Because of this, 4 trains must be delayed. Services between Ascot and Bagshot, England were disrupted when the train driver made a strange discovery.

The turtle’s name is Solomon. He was rescued by workers after seeing him on the track. Services returned to normal after 7 a.m. After that, Southwestern Railway (SWR) said, “He has been retrieved and is now on his way home. Network Rail and SWR staff moved the tortoise to a position of safety on the platform, including a short ride on the train itself. Its owner collected it from the station later that evening and, as far as we know, that the tortoise was unharmed.”

Because of Solomon’s experience, people have been warned to keep an eye on their pets.

“While we are delighted that this story has a successful conclusion and can reassure passengers that our ‘everyone home safe, every day’ ambitions extend to pets, we must remind everyone that the railway is dangerous,” said Network Rail.

Later, Network Rail made a train heading of “trespasser of an unusual nature.” Solomon got to travel on the train to Ascot Station, where they arranged for him to be taken to the vet in Staines.

A spokesperson for the train said, “We are sorry to any passengers who were disrupted during this incident.” The train worker also mentioned that, “Trains need several football pitches to stop from full speed and there are less obvious dangers such as the, always on, electrified third rail.”

The miracle that the turtle is not hurt, shocked everybody. But the turtle was unharmed, and if something happens again like this experience, it might not be as lucky as this time because people and animals could get hurt on the railway, and Solomon made a dodge on that one.
