The U.S. Army has just suspended Lt. Gen. Gary Volesky from his job and placed him under investigation after posting a tweet that mocked first lady Jill Biden’s tweet about the Supreme Court’s recent decision on Roe vs. Wade.
Volesky responded in a tweet: “glad to see you finally know what a woman is.”
Army spokesperson Cynthia Smith told The Washington Post that Lt. Gen. Theodore Martin suspended Volesky from his contract and was “pending the outcome of the commander’s inquiry.”
The general is a decorated officer within the military. Before retiring from the Army, Volesky commanded the I Corps from 2017 to 2020. From 2014 to 2017, he commanded the 101st Airborne Division from 2012 to 2014.
He also served in the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan. Volesky was awarded a Silver Star for his involvement in northeastern Baghdad. He is a board member of Unified Business Technologies.
Volesky’s reply to Biden’s tweet echoes the interaction between Senator Marsha Blackburn and Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson during Jackson’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings this year, in which Blackburn continuously asked Jackson to define the word “woman” in a debate about transgender rights.
