AI Writes Poems…Both Shouldn’t Mix

By: Sammy Wang

Noodles and Bananas

“Slurping hot noodles
Bananas add sweetness too
Perfect match of flavors”

Above is a haiku, a type of poem containing seventeen syllables originating from Japan. The haiku is about noodles and bananas…but that doesn’t sound right. Noodles and bananas don’t mix together, at least not to the majority of people. Even with that thought, who would really make a poem about noodles and bananas.

Apparently no one, at least not a living person according to a simple google search of “poems about noodles and bananas.” Several links lead to poems about both subjects, just separately.

The poem was generated by AI, with just a few words and three clicks. Even though it follows the right structure and the given rules for each type of poem, it doesn’t feel human.

Poems are a form of art, used to express the creator’s ideas. They are made with the purpose to convey thoughts, stories, and emotions. Time is put into writing poems, from carefully selecting words to changing how those words are placed, it shows how much effort an artist has put into their work.

But for that art to be completed within a few seconds with no real thoughts and ideas put into it is really invalidating.

“AI poetry on the grounds that it has so far failed to produce any good poems…current AI poetry as the operation of fancy — mechanical recombination of elements — rather than the active imagination” Keith Holyoak, a poet and author, said.

He does add that AI has the potential to grow but questions if AI poems would truly touch people’s hearts.
