AMLO Positive for COVID-19

By Andrew Tan

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador tweeted that he has tested positive for Covid-19.

López Obrador has consistently rejected lockdowns and the health risks of the virus. He stated that the pandemics “won’t do anything to us.” In late July, the country had more than 46,000 deaths from Covid-19. The president informed reporters that he won’t put on a mask and won’t stop talking until Mexico has eliminated corruption. Currently, Mexico is approaching 150,00 Covid-19 deaths, the world’s fourth-largest death toll. Since Mexico has limited testing, the actual number is way higher, according to health officials. López Obrador was elected in 2018 because of a large base of supporters after supporting a fight against corruption and violence. “In December, Mexico became the first Latin American country to kick off a vaccination effort upon receiving an initial batch of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Mexico has administered more than 600,000 doses so far,” according to NPR.

López Obrador plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to discuss Russian’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine.
