Australian Cartoon Bluey Releases Touching Cricket Episode

By: Ada Xin

A special episode of the cartoon Bluey was timed to appear with the Ashes series, on day five of the World Test Championship Final; there were more views on the Bluey Cricket Episode than the Australian cricket team grabbing the world title, with 563,000 views to 524,000.

Bluey is a cartoon character with a family of blue heeler dogs, including mum Chilli, dad Bandit, and sister Bingo.

The cartoons have aired for three seasons and 151 episodes in, and have tried to make a touching episode and left grown adults in tears.

The episode is about how Bandit is recounting the story of a cricket game at a kids’ birthday party until red kelpie Rusty gets to the cricket batting place.

The game of cricket has been mentioned in the previous episodes, but only as the background or as a subject the characters casually talk about.

The dad, Bandit, narrates how Rusty developed his skills. Bluey is a minor character in the episode, saying: “Cricket’s just about hitting a ball around the grass,” before her dad says, “Cricket’s about more than that, kid.”

Australian cricket batter Ed Cowan admitted he was moved to tears by the Bluey episode.

“Honestly, I was bawling my eyes out,” he said. “So Romy is 10 and a half — she’s too old for Bluey, still loves it,” he says. “If you’re a cricket fan, I don’t care how old you are, you have to watch this episode. And if you don’t have a tear in your eye at the end of the episode, I don’t even know if you’re human.”

People around the world are watching the moving episode of Bluey, and judging their reactions, Rusty has hit a clear six for the game of cricket.

Melinda Farwell is a cricket journalist and she tweeted: “FINALLY got to see the Bluey ‘Cricket’ episode. It’s simply beautiful! Do yourself a favour, even if you’re not a kid or you don’t have one. So much to love!”

Many more people posted clear reviews of the episode and their recommendations for watching the cartoon.

The show might even break a record in the U.S. market. The Bluey cartoon earned a sixth overall with over 100 million streams on Disney+, or 737 million minutes watched.
