Biden’s Struggles in the Debate With Trump

By: Yuxi Nan

Many people are concerned for the 81-year-old U.S. President Joe Biden in the debate between him, and former U.S. President Donald Trump on June 28, 2024. Biden had trouble talking, and stuttered between words, while Trump seemed confident, but he also stated incorrect claims and didn’t support them with facts either.

There were a lot of important aspects that Trump and Biden discussed, including the U.S. economy, Trump’s criminal conviction and hidden payments. Trump believes that the U.S. economy was strongest when he led the country. But Biden brought up Trump’s criminal conviction, as he became the first former president to be convicted of a crime earlier this year. Trump was also accused of hiding payments to a woman he had a relationship with when he was already married, so she could keep quiet.

Biden’s performance in the debate was very concerning, because of many reasons including a cold which made his voice raspy throughout. Biden’s team wanted to remind voters of the problematic issues of Trump during, and after his leadership. However, after the debate, people are more worried about Biden’s capacity for the job than Trump’s. According to Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s former communications’ director, right after the debate, “There’s no two ways about it, that was not a good debate for Joe Biden.” Sara Smith, BBC’s North America editor, said, “Joe Biden had one job-to persuade Americans that he wasn’t too old. He failed that test.”

There is high anticipation for who will be the next president of the U.S.A.. Biden is getting a bit too old for this job, but Trump, who is only two years younger than Biden, is lying and unclear to the people he is planning to lead. this debate has caused a lot of concern for both Biden and Trump.
