On June 18, 2022, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson traveled to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky for the second time since the Russian invasion in February this year.

When Johnson met Zelensky, he mentioned the creation of new military help for the Ukraine. Zelensky described Johnson as a great ally.

At the joint press conference, Johnson stated that the U.K’s training program for the Ukrainian soldiers would harness “that most powerful of forces, the Ukrainian determination to win.”

According to Johnson, every 120 days 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers will participate in the U.K lead training program. He said that the program would “accelerate their deployment, rebuild their forces and scale-up their resistance.”

Focuses of the program include “battle-winning skills for the front line, as well as basic medical training, cyber-security and counter explosive tactics.”

Johnson canceled a scheduled visit to the Yorkshire town of Doncaster in order to meet Zelensky.

After Johnson’s trip, the European Commission supported Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union.
