Boxing Class Breaks World Record For Most Attendees

By: Emily Wan

On June 18th , a mass boxing class in Mexico City taught by current and former Mexican boxers set a world record for largest boxing class.

The event was organized by the Sports Institute of Mexico City, with fifteen instructors including Erik Morales, Andy Ruiz Jr., Oscar Valdez, Jackie Nava, Humberto González, Miguel Berchelt, Jose Cuevas, Alfonso Zamora, Jose Luis Bueno, Jose Antonio Aguirre, Ganigan Lopez, Adrian Hernandez, Mariana Juarez, Ana Maria Torres and Alan David Picasso. A total of 14,299 attended the class, breaking the previous Guinness World Record held by Moscow, Russia when it hosted a class with 3,250 attendees in 2017 in Red Square.

Additionally, the class also included participants wearing the colors of the Mexican flag, and they formed this shape in the city square, blanketing it in red, white, and green. The multicolored t-shirts were distributed a few weeks before the event by Javier Hidalgo Ponce, the director of the Sports Institute. He commented that “It will be a great multicolored party because together we will form the Mexican flag with these beautiful shirts that each and every one of the participants in the Massive Boxing Class will have.”

Originally, around 40,000 participants were scheduled to attend the event. Due to limited space at the city square, only around 15,000 – 20,000 people were expected to participate.

Furthermore, the class lasted thirty minutes and only included two twenty second water breaks.
