Break dancing will soon be featured as a sport in the Olympics starting this August at the largest public square in Paris. It seems to be quite the attraction as every seat there in the square is completely sold out.
However, some people don’t think that break dancing is really a sport. But Sunny Choi, a professional break dancer, says that break dancing is just as much of a sport as figure skating or gymnastics, and that ,”There’s no doubt in my mind this is a sport,”.
Sunny’s parents moved from South Korea to America when she was very young; her real name is Sun Chio and Sunny is her nickname. Sunny learned gymnastics at a young age and quickly became a competitive gymnast.
She started to learn how to breakdance when she was a freshman in college, saw other people breakdancing, and they convinced her to come to a class. Naturally, because she knew gymnastics it gave her an advantage in learning how to breakdance.
After graduating from business school she worked as a cosmetics executive, but still breakdanced and sometimes participated in international competitions. In late 2021, Sunny attended a camp for talented breakdancers and when the coach asked who was shooting for the Olympics, Sunny didn’t raise her hand.
This was simply because she was very busy and making time for the Olympics and working as an executive was impossible. In the end she decided to give up her job and pursue the dream of winning the Olympics, after she placed second in the world games in July 2022.
Then in 2023 at the Pan American Games, she placed first place qualifying for the Olympics. Now just because she decided to do a single break dancing class, she soon will be competing for 1st place in the Olympics.
