Caitlin Clark, the 22-year-old point guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes, set a new record as the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history on February 15, 2024, by reaching a career total of 3,528 points.
Interest in women’s college basketball has been growing steadily over the past few years. Caitlin Clark is a big reason for this surge. The 22-year-old point guard for the Iowa Hawkeyes is credited with drawing mainstream attention to a sport that has often been overshadowed by men’s basketball.
In the article “Caitlin Clark’s Incredible Scoring Record Shines Light On Women’s Basketball” by Jono Sison, the author mentions, “According to the NCAA, ‘The Caitlin Clark Effect’ helped set a new total attendance record of 8,784,401 for Division I women’s basketball during the 2022-23 season.” This number surpassed the previous record by over 150,000, showing how big of an impact Clark has on the fanbase of women’s basketball.
Clark has been increasing her total career points. Almost 2 weeks after she broke the record of most points in women’s NCAA history on February 15, she destroyed the all time women’s record of 3,649 points. On March 3, 2024, Clark achieved another historic milestone by surpassing Pete Maravich’s record of 3,667 points, marking the highest career total in Division 1 history for both men and women.
Each game Clark played dramatically increased her total women’s NCAA career points. Ultimately, she ended her college basketball career with a grand sum of 3,951 points!
Caitlyn Clark holds many records, including her NCAA Division I record for most 3-pointers (163) in a season by a man or woman. The title was previously held by Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. Clark is also the first Division 1 player to top 1,000 assists and 800 rebounds!
Clark is now playing in the WNBA for the Indiana Fever. She is averaging 16.3 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game!
