Claudia Sheinbaum Becomes Mexico’s First Female President!

By: Ethan Chau

On June 2, 2024, Claudia Sheinbaum made history after she was elected to become Mexico’s first female president.

Sheinbaum, who takes office on October 1, 2024, will also be the first person of Jewish inheritance to lead Mexico. Her achievement is even more extraordinary, considering that women in Mexico gained the right to vote in 1953.

Recently, the future president served as Head of Government for Mexico City. However, Sheinbaum isn’t a career politician but a climate scientist. The 61-year-old heroine has dedicated much of her career to advocating for the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy sources. She pledges to reduce Mexico’s reliance on fossil fuels in six years by investing billions in green energy projects and improving the city’s mass transit systems.

On top of that, she plans to end crime in Mexico by increasing the number of police officers in Mexico and installing security cameras throughout the nation.

Although Sheinbaum’s time in office will be full of challenges, she has already made progress in her job as president by impacting girls and women worldwide. Her actions show that gender equality on the global stage is within reach.
An 87-year-old woman, Edelmira Montiel, said “I never imagined that one day I would vote for a woman. “Before, we couldn’t even vote, and when you could, it was for the person your husband told you to vote for. Thank God that has changed and I get to live it.”

Currently, Sheinbaum has shown her determination for Mexico and her position as Mexico’s first female president. From pledging to make Mexico safer to inspiring women worldwide, Sheinbaum will have a fruitful time as Mexico’s president.
