 A yellow-black blur swoops down and grabs a honeybee, brings it home, and feeds it to its children. It’s a murder hornet. These hornets are dangerous to the environment and like to kill honeybees. This wasp gets its nickname from killing honeybees. According to Science News For Students, they like to swoop down and grab the honeybees. The hornet then carries the bee home to feed its young. Several dozen “hornets can kill a whole hive” of honeybees. They can kill thousands of bees in hours. To attack, hornets bite the heads off adult bees. The attackers leave the adult bodies in heaps. Then they carry off the young bees as protein for their young. These bees aren’t very common in the U.S., but there are a few. As the world’s largest hornet, Asian giant hornets or “murder hornets” can grow up to 5 centimeters (2 inches) long. It’s wingspan can grow up to 7 centimeters (2.8 inches). With the growing extinction of honeybees, it is very important that if we keep them safe from Asian giant hornets.
