Did The Live-Action Barbie Movie Wipe Out the World’s Pink Paint Supply?

If you watched the Barbie Dreamhouse TV series, you may know that Barbie’s life is always pink. In the new live-action Barbie movie, the makers say they wiped out a company’s entire supply of one shade of pink.

“The world ran out of pink,” production designer Sarah Greenwood told Architectural Digest early last week.

Greenwood said that the construction of Barbieland caused an international shortage of the fluorescent shade of Rosco paint.

Lauren Proud, Rosco’s vice president of global marketing, told the Los Angeles Times on Friday that “they used as much paint as we had,” but the paint was in short supply to begin with during the making of the movie in 2022, which made it harder for Rosco since the makers of the Barbie Movie required a lot of paint.

Rosco was dealing with pandemic-related supply issues while recovering from the Texas freeze in 2021. Even so, Proud tried to deliver as fast as possible for the Movie.

“There was this shortage, and then we gave them everything we could, I don’t know they can claim credit,” Proud said, before acknowledging: “They did clean us out on paint.”

However, there’s no question about where it all went. The main movie trailer reveals a larger live version of Barbie’s iconic three-story house in which her Corvette convertible and all the furniture was bright pink.
