On Monday, July 15, 2024, Donald Trump chose Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate in the upcoming presidential election. Vance, a once fierce critic of Trump, is now a loyal ally of the former U.S. president.
James D. Vance, at 39 years old, is already quite famous for his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which was published in 2016. After getting elected to the Senate in 2022, then being selected by Donald Trump to be his running mate in the coming election, he has become even more famous.
Vance served in the Marine Corps for 4 years before becoming a senator. He worked for a short while as a temporary lawyer after graduating from law school. Vance is also a father of three children.
Trump made his choice on the first day of the Republican National Convention, which is an event where the United States Republican Party nominates and confirms their candidates for the 2024 United States Election.
Originally, Vance was a fierce criticizer of Trump, calling him a “total fraud,” and a “moral disaster” after his unlikely rise to president. “I was certainly skeptical of Donald Trump in 2016, but President Trump was a great president, and he changed my mind,” Vance said in his interview after he was chosen to be Trump’s running mate. “I think he changed the minds of a lot of Americans, because again he delivered that peace and prosperity.” Vance eventually changed and agreed he was proved wrong by Trump’s actions as president in office and became one of his most steadfast supporters.
“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump said, at the Republican National Convention.
