Ivana Trump, the first wife of former president Donald Trump, died Thursday of ‘blunt force injuries’ to her torso and chest, according to a medical examiner. Her death is ruled an accident by authorities.

Mrs. Trump was found unresponsive on a staircase at her home in Manhattan, officials say. It is believed that she fell to her death. “I am very saddened to inform all of those that loved her, of which there are many, that Ivana Trump has passed away at her home in New York City,” Mr. Trump said in a post on his social medial platform Truth Social.

More than 25% of senior Americans older than 65 fall each year and falling is the leading cause of injury-related death in that age group. Deaths are at a rate of about 64 per 100,000 seniors.

Ivanka, the daughter of Ivana said “[h]eartbroken by the passing of my mother. Mom was brilliant, charming, passionate and wickedly funny. She lived life to the fullest. … I will miss her forever.”

Ivana, who was born in the Czech Republic, married Donald Trump in 1977 and divorced him in 1992. They were seen as one of the most powerful couples in the 1980’s in New York, as they were typically featured in tabloids.

Ivana went on to marry 2 more men, Rossano Rubicondi and Riccardo Mazzucchelli. In 1971, she married Alfred Winklmayr so she could leave the then-communist Czech Republic for Canada. She then left Canada for the United States.

Ivana played a big role in Mr. Trump’s real estate businesses, with the New York Times describing her as extremely hard working and with a keen eye for details. They were on good terms recently and were talking to each other about once a week. “She fled communism and embraced this country,” said Donald Trump and his children. She also supported him in politics and encouraged his use of Twitter. “I raised them right and they turned out fabulous,” said Ivana of her 3 children.
