Edible Cement

By: Leo Zou

Have you ever wondered where all your leftovers and rotten food goes? Well, it may surprise you that, according to the UN Environment Program’s Food Waste Index, more than 900 million tons of food is thrown away every year. All that food waste accounts for up to ten percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

Fortunately, researchers have developed a way to turn a variety of food waste into ‘edible cement.’ This material can be up to four times stronger than concrete, and in addition, it can reduce food waste and serve as a substitute for concrete, meaning that there will not be harmful problems caused by making concrete.

To make it, you first dry it, and then crush it into a fine powder. Lastly, you press it into a solid, creating the edible cement. Edible cement is also biodegradable, meaning that it can be composted. You can make it edible (hence the name) if you boil it! In conclusion, Scientists have developed a unique way to turn food waste into a cement, making it much stronger than concrete and a green solution to food waste problems.
