Eluned Morgan was chosen as the first woman to lead the Labour Party, also known as Welsh Labour, in Wales after no one else stood against her in an election on 24 July, 2024. On 6 August, Ms Morgan is set to become the next Welsh First Minister.
In the Welsh Parliament, the party leader with the most elected members becomes the first minister. This time, it is the Labour party. Other parties include the Conservative Party and Plaid Cymru. They have many differences; some vote for Justice, and some vote for individuality. The Labor Party had about half of the parliament’s seats.
Until Parliament starts their work again around August after a summer break, she will not officially replace Mr. Gething, the previous first minister, in the job. According to Newsround, Ms. Morgan said: “I am truly honored to become the first woman to lead Welsh Labour and to be put forward as our party’s nominee to become the next First Minister of Wales.
Eluned Morgan has mostly been a politician in her life. She also became a health minister in 2021. Her parents were also involved in politics. According to Newsround, Eluned Morgan’s husband, Rhys Jenkins, is a GP and a priest, and they have two children.
Gething will stay as first minister until the Parliament confirms Morgan in a vote. This vote will not happen until Parliament is back from its break. A formal roll call vote requires all 60 Members of the Welsh Parliament.
