Eluned Morgan the First Female Leader of Wales

Ms. Morgan will be replacing Vaughan Gething as the next first minister for Wales. Mr. Gething resigned from his position on July 16th, and no one else went against Ms. Morgan for the position in the Labour Party.

In the Welsh Parliament, the leader of the party with the most votes becomes first minister, and right now that is the Labour Party.

Ms. Morgan said, “I am truly honored to become the first woman to lead Welsh Labour and to be put forward as our party’s nominee to become the next first minister of Wales. I want to ensure that everyone in Wales has the opportunity and ability to fulfill their potential.”

The leaders of other parties in Wales congratulated Ms. Morgan, and Prime Minister Keir Stamer said Eluned Morgan becoming the first female leader of Wales is “fantastic news” for Wales and the Labour Party.

Though Plaid Cymru, another party, is calling for a Senedd election, he said: “The people of Wales must be given the opportunity to elect a new government and an election must be called.”

In 2016 Ms. Morgan was elected to the Senedd for the Mid and West Wales, in 2018 tried to become the first minister but came last, and in 2021 she became the health minister.

Before Ms. Morgan can become first minister a formal roll call is required. All Members of the Senedd have to say out loud who they think the next first minister should be.

Ms. Morgan has truly made history in Wales and will continue to shine in her political life.
