On Sunday, June 14th, 2024, the European Championship (Euro) 2024 ended at Berlin’s Olympiastadion as England faced Spain in the final.
After a humdrum half ending with the score 0-0, England still had some hope, but moments after the second kicked off, Nico Williams scored for Spain. But England’s Cole Palmer took revenge.
Palmer made a stunning shot; the ball flew to the corner of the goal, which increased the chances of England winning the trophy. A late goal made by the Spanish in the 86th minute secured their win. Which extended the English men’s 58 years without a major tournament win.
Despite not performing at his best during the tournament, England captain Harry Kane earned a share of the Euro 2024 Golden Boot by scoring three goals.
He told the BBC the loss was “as painful as it could be.”
“I think we did really well to get back into the game and get back to 1–1, and then we quite can’t use that momentum to push on,” Kane said: “It’s been a tough tournament we’ve had to show a lot of resilience.
It’s been a difficult run since and we’ve done extremely well to get there. We wanted to do it for ourselves and also for our fans. Everyone who’s believed in us the whole way–right now it’s just a huge disappointment.”
Gareth Southgate is an English professional football and soccer manager.
“ I think today we didn’t quite keep possession of the ball well enoug,” Southgate said..
King Charles wrote to Gareth Southgate and the team following the loss, telling them to “hold your heads high. We’re all so proud of you. Onwards.”
Overall, the Spanish earned their trophy at the Euro Cup.
