FAMOUS BASEBALL ANNOUNCER DIES AT 94

By: Benjamin Wang

Vin Scully, the popular baseball announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers, passed away at 94 on Tuesday, August 2. He won the hearts of millions as he delivered unmatched commentary with true passion for over sixty years.

During Scully’s last baseball game, in 2016, he said “I have said enough for a lifetime, and for the last time, I wish you all a very pleasant good afternoon.”

Many people call baseball the only game you can see on the radio, and Scully helped listeners immerse themselves in the game through his honest, unbiased commentary. Scully always used easy-to-understand vocabulary, though he was sometimes scholarly. He was able to improvise and narrate without skipping a beat. Most importantly, despite being a Dodgers fan, he would often criticize the team and was always objective in his announcing.

During Scully’s final broadcast, he said to his audience, “You and I have been friends for a long time. But I know in my heart that I’ve always needed you more than you’ve ever needed me. God gives you for every storm, a rainbow. For every tear, a smile. For every care, a promise and a blessing in each trial. For every problem life sends a faithful friend to share.”
