At our lab, we reviewed how an author or a poet establishes tone in their writing. We also talked about the impact of particular tones. Read this poem called “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe. Then, consider the following:

  1. Read more about Edgar Allen Poe by starting with this website. Then, write a short article explaining some of his most interesting and prominent contributions to the literary world. End your article by explaining why it is necessary to read works by Poe.
  2. Think about how Poe establishes suspense in his writing. Use this website as inspiration to write your own “How To” article instructing students on the best ways to establish a suspenseful tone in their writing, which will hook the reader.
  3. Write your own suspenseful poem. Pay attention to the tone of voice you use as an author. Be sure to use Poe’s poem to help you with purposeful attitude.
