First Female Leader of Wales

By: Emma Xing

Eluned Morgan will become Wales’ first female leader. She became the first woman to lead the Labour Party in Wales after no one else stood against her in the election.

In the Senedd Cymru, the leader of the party with the most elected member is chosen as first minister. And since the Labour Party currently has the most elected members, Eluned Morgan is set to be the next first minister.

However, she won’t officially replace Vaughan Gething until the Senedd starts work again after summer break.

“I am truly honored to become the first woman to lead Welsh Labour and put forward as our party’s nominee to become the next first minister of Wales,” Eluned Morgan said.

Eluned Morgan has been a politician for most of her life. She has even tried to be the leader of the Labour Party before. She was brought up in Cardiff and went to Ysgol Glantaf secondary school.

She went to a university in Hull and worked in television. Soon after, she became the youngest member of the European Parliament in 1994.

In 2011, she became Baroness Morgan of Ely and worked in the House of Lords.
In 2016, she was elected to the Senedd for the mId and West Wales region. Then in 2021, she became health minister during the COVID pandemic.

Eluned Morgan has tried to become Labour Party’s leader before, but unfortunately came last in the contest.

Vaughan Gething will stay as first minister until Eluned is confirmed to be the next first minister and the first female leader of Wales.
