Eluned Morgan set a goal to become Wales’ next first minister, as well as to become the first female leader of Wales. She was the first feminist to lead Wales’ Labour Party. None of her competitors stood a chance against Morgan.
The Labour Party had the most elected members, so she became the first minister of the Welsh Parliament.
Previous minister Vaughan Gething announced he resigned, so Morgan had an open spot. Though she is not minister yet, she will be when the Senedd starts to work again after summer break.
Ms. Morgan stated to BBC reporters that, “I am truly honored to become the first woman to lead Welsh Labour and to be put forward as our party’s nominee to become the next first minister of Wales.”
“I want to ensure that everyone in Wales has the opportunity and ability to fulfill their potential,” she said.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Eluned’s appointment is “fantastic news” for Wales and Morgan’s Party. “Eluned brings with her a wealth of experience and track record of delivery and, as the first woman to lead Welsh Labour, she is already making history,” he said as feedback.
Other party leaders in Wales congratulated Ms. Morgan, but added that much work has to be done to the country. Andrew RT Davies, who is the leader of the country’s Conservative Party, went on to congratulate Morgan, but also criticized her for her period as the health minister, saying that Wales would be a lot worse in the future because of her decisions.
