First Female President in Mexico

By: Tiffany Han

In the United States, women have suffered discrimination in the past. In the beginning, women were just a tool for continuing the generation and had no rights. Slowly, the rules started to change, and after many struggles and sacrifices, women were almost on equal footing with men. However, no woman in the United States ever ran for president. Mexico used to be the same. But now, after many challenges, Claudia Sheinbaum became the first female governing Mexico, making the women of long ago very proud of her.

Claudia Sheinbaum is 61 this year. She was born and raised in Mexico City. Before Sheinbaum became president, she was Mexico City’s Head of Government. Sheinbaum is also a climate scientist with a PhD in energy engineering. She dedicates much of her time advocating for a healthier environment.

After becoming the president , Sheinbaum still strives for a better environment. She plans to invest billions into green energy projects and improving Mexico’s transit system. Sheinbaum hopes to cut the nation’s use of fossil fuels in half over the next six years as a result of her investment. Another issue she wants to resolve is the violence in Mexico. She plans to achieve this by adding police officers and security.

Despite the many struggles awaiting Claudia Sheinbaum, she has already made an impact. Girls and women are inspired by this new, drastic change in the world. “For the first time in 200 years of the republic, I will become the first female president of Mexico,” Sheinbaum told supporters. “And as I have said on other occasions, I do not arrive alone. We all arrived, with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our ancestors, our mothers, our daughters, and granddaughters.”
