Meet Monica Poli, a 57-year-old native of Venice who has unwittingly emerged as the eccentric movement’s leading lady. She’s like a pickpocket’s worst nightmare with her “Attenzione, Pickpocket!” slogan, which has become famous on TikTok. Superheroes are out; Monica is here!
A group of regular individuals who have turned pickpocket hunters is called Cittadini Non Distratti. They launch covert operations with cameras in hand to identify the thieves. But this is not your typical stakeout – these are counter-pickpockets with a sense of humor!
Imagine a pickpocket in the act, thinking they’re cunning, then out of nowhere Monica shows up, shouting her catchphrase like a wrestler about to enter the ring. The thief’s expression speaks for itself; it expresses shock, horror, and a desperate attempt to avoid attention. Greetings, pickpocket!
But the entire squad joins in on the fun, not just Monica. They’ve inspired countless parodies, catchy remixed TikTok tunes, and even dancing contests. Dance fads that are going viral can go, pickpocket deterrents are here!
All of the pickpocketing videos are small comedies. Imagine a robber attempting to take a phone while donning a large jacket, only to become entangled in their own attire and perform the moonwalk as a result.
Maria Pasquale, the travel journalist and author, has some pro tips for tourists to avoid pickpockets. She advises travelers to carry bags crossbody and stay vigilant in crowded areas. But with Cittadini Non Distratti around, tourists might end up belly-laughing their way to safety!
