Fresh support for Gold Coast’s bid to host Commonwealth Games

By: Caroline Chen

The 2026 Commonwealth Games were unexpectedly canceled because it was more expensive than expected. But, all you sports-loving fans don’t get depressed, as it might have a little chance of being held again.

Australia’s richest person decided to join forces with Swimming Queensland, Volleyball Australia, and artistic swimming Australia to help with the bid of hosting the game made by Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate.

Mayor Tate offered to host the competition in Gold Coast, with a budget of about 1 billion dollars. The government has said no though because they think that he should focus more on the Olympics in 2032, as it is a much bigger competition.

“We must show what we are capable of as a country,” Cr Tate said.

As they hosted a commonwealth games competition in 2018, right before the Tokyo Olympics, where they won 13 gold and 25 medals in total, they believe that the Commonwealth games would also be a good prep for people who are joining the Olympic teams.
