Gold Coast, Australia faced money problems ahead of the t the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Gina Rinehart, a billionaire and leader of a mining company, recently joined in helping the Gold Coast’s mayor Tom Tate. The city will make one million dollars in cash just to run the games.
“Having seen the joy that athletes and their families experienced when competing in front of a home crowd for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Ms. Rinehart would certainly welcome the 2026 event to be again held in Australia, especially at the Gold Coast, where it was run so successfully before,” Ms. Rinehart’s spokesman said.
Mayor Tate said that it was fantastic for Rineheart to help raise funds.
“We must show what we are capable of as a country,” Tate said.
However, Kev Hasemann, the boss of Swimming Queensland, says, “The Commonwealth Games give Australia’s best swimmers a vital opportunity to hone their racing skills for the pinnacle events on the world stage: the World Aquatics Championships and the Olympic Games.”
The games were last held in 2018.
“To me, the Aussie way of life is to honor a deal, whether it is secured with a handshake or a formal contract,” Tate said.“Aussies are known for being fair dinkum when it comes to their word so, politics aside, we must honor our country’s commitment to the 2026 Games.”
