What is Slang?
Slang is language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal. Each generation, especially the younger one, invents its own language to distinguish itself from older generations and establish a sense of belonging within their peers. For example, in the 1920s, the slang consisted of phrases like “bee’s knees,” which meant an extraordinary person, thing or idea, and “bent cars” which meant stolen cars. These days, teenagers are using a different type of slang called “brain rot.”
How does it spread?
Teenage slang spreads fast. New words and phrases emerge quickly, often spreading through social media, the arts and music. Platforms like TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram are very common places that introduce new slang. They also come from movies and TV shows.
What does today’s slang sound like?
Some popular slang today includes:
Ghosting – Suddenly cutting off all communication with someone without explanation.
Slay – To do something exceptionally well, used to compliment someone’s performance.
Flex – To show off one’s possessions, skills, or achievements.
Buss – Something that is really good, especially in reference to food.
Skibidi – This has lots of meanings including “very” “really” “the most” or “cool.”
Sigma – a very cool person
Why do we use slang?
Slang helps teenagers express themselves and relate to their peers. Some teenagers use slang as an act of rebellion. When kids use their own language, it might be vexing at first, but it has many uses. Slang goes away very fast once it gets used too much. For example, in the 1920s, people used to say “beezer” but not anymore. It might disappear, so don’t miss it!
