Bristol, a charming city nestled within the United Kingdom, is complex and connected to a small delight that holds a significant place in its history: chocolate. Dating back to around 1373, when Bristol gained its independence, the city’s relationship with chocolate has deep roots. This sweet treat has become intertwined with Bristol’s identity, serving as a delicious testament to its past.
In the article “Secret Bristol: A Giant Chocolate Button Has Been Created To Mark Bristol’s 650-Year Celebrations” by Charles Case, it is revealed that the Giant Chocolate Button is just one of the many chocolate replicas that grace Bristol. These replicas, measuring between 1-2 meters, are crafted with diligent detail to mirror original objects that hold giant amounts of historical value. Each chocolate creation serves as a sweet connection to Bristol’s undeceiving past.
For instance, the Giant Button pays respect to the countless patients who received care at Bristol’s purpose-built asylum. This mouthwatering chocolate sculpture stands as a symbol of compassion and strength, representing the city’s commitment to providing support and healing throughout its history. Additionally, another remarkable chocolate sculpture takes the form of a ship wheel. This wheel serves as a tribute to Bristol’s early trading history. Remains of the real wheel are displayed at the M Shed Museum originating from the withdrawn ship TSS Bayano. This wheel played a giant role in transporting bananas and rum from the Caribbean while also serving in the First and Second World Wars.
Through these chocolate replicas, Bristol’s rich history comes to life, offering an inviting glimpse into the city’s past. Each sculpture tells a unique story, weaving together the threads of Bristol’s heritage and inviting visitors to embark on a delicious journey through time.
