Glossy World

By: Matthew Wang

Everyday we live, an illusion of peace,
Meaningless praises, as if words could let you fly.
“The greatest age,” yet a century to suffer,
The most advanced the world, a world soon to die.

We were told that we were surviving, yet millions are killed every day,
We were told that we were thriving, yet poverty’s worsening every day.
We were told that we were happy, yet depression’s now on the rise,
We were told that we were savvy, our inventions now leading our demise.

Society lies, an empty comforting,
Society hides, a danger lurking,
Yet underneath the web of lies, thick blanket of smoke,
Lies a singular truth, we are not going to be fine.

A herd of sheep, unaware yet not ready for truth,
As disaster lurks nearer, an opportunity to strike,
Our world precariously balanced, no room for mistakes.
Even in ignorance, nobody is safe.
