Google Urged by Lawmakers to Fix Fake Abortion Clinics

By: Kehan Lin

Law authorities have been criticizing Google’s fake abortion facilities presented on its search engine.

It is essential for popular technology platforms to behave appropriately and for authorities to hold them responsible as inaccuracy and disinformation have a serious influence on an individual’s health. With Google being such an impactful browser all around the world, one mistake can lead to many more.

According to statistics, 37 percent of Google Maps searches and 11% of Google search results link to businesses that do not provide access to abortion. Additionally, nearly 28% of Google’s adverts were produced by anti-abortion centers. These fraudulent abortion institutions may not only discourage people from seeking abortions in general but also endanger the patients’ health both physically and mentally.

More than 90% of the world’s search engines consist of Google, therefore such misleading information can have many negative effects on both the consumer and the organization.

Women’s reproductive rights in the U.S. have been predicted to drastically change after the final decision decided by the Supreme Court. Currently, the District of Columbia and 16 other states in the U.S. have defended abortion rights. Another 13 states, however, already consider abortion as unlawful or even illegal.
