On July 17th, 2022, a plane carrying 11 tonnes of weapons to Bangladesh crashed
in Greece. 8 People were killed from the collision.
The plane planned to travel from Siberia, making stops in Jordan, Saudi Arabia
and India.
Soon after the plane took off from Siberia, it ran into an engine problem and
asked for an emergency landing. Unfortunately, the plane could not make it that
far. The plane crashed close to the city of Kavala.
2 Kilometers away, Aimilia Tsaptanova, a Kavala resident saw the plane crash and
was shocked that the plane did not hit her home.
“It was full of smoke, it had a noise I can’t describe and it went over the
mountain,” she said. “It passed the mountain, turned and crashed into the fields.
“There were flames, we were scared. A lot of cars came, but they couldn’t
approach because there were continuous explosions.”
Dangerous smoke with an unknown white substance filled the air. Army,
explosive experts and Greek Atomic Energy Commission staff could not get close
by. Drones were used to check the wreckage.
It is unclear exactly what kind of weapons were on board. Some say they are
“illuminating mortar mines and training (mines)”, others say they are mortar
shells bought from Serbia for the training of army and border guards.
