Hidden Portrait of Van Gogh has Been Found!

On July 14, 2022, a hidden picture of Van Gogh was found. When Von Gogh was low on money, he would draw on the back side of his paintings. A few of these works have been found, but not all of them. This time, though, one was discovered at the National Galleries of Scotland.

“Moments like this are incredibly rare,” Frances Fowle, senior curator of French art, said in a statement. “We have discovered an unknown work by Vincent van Gogh, one of the most important and popular artists in the world.”

The painting was found on the back of 1885 piece called The Head of a Peasant Woman. It was covered by tons of cardboard and glue.

The painting was discovered with the help of an x-ray machine. Experts at the museum say the cardboard was added in the twentieth century. Although they can’t uncover the painting, it is still possible to see it. The x-ray will be put at an exhibit for visitors to see.

The museum thinks that this painting is a picture of a bearded man, sitting with a handkerchief loosely tied around his neck. His right ear is in shadows, while his left is clearly shown.
