Holiday Cards Go With Theme of 2020

By Brayden Yin

This year, many Americans have postponed or canceled gatherings with family and friends, so holiday cards are one of the few things that can still be shared.

However, 2020 has not been a good year. It has been more of an “ill and dim” year than a “merry and bright one.” If the traditional words on a card are not very proper in these times, what goes on the card, then?

Chandra Greer, the owner of an online stationery shop, has an answer. She says that she made cards that acknowledge the pandemic. One card shows a smiling dumpster engulfed in flames with the words 2020 being eaten by the flames. That is one of Greer’s best-selling cards.

Another card has text that shows the words “OH OH OH!” which symbolizes “upside down times”.

A sold-out card encourages caring for yourself by saying “Holidays are for crying and eating” in a large font. Yet more greeting cards mock the pandemic in a funny way, with a card that says “Merry Christmask”. “I feel almost like it’s my purpose during this time, not only to help people feel better but to help them help others.” said Greer in an interview.

People have been shipping cards since the start of the pandemic, with words like “It’s okay not to be okay” inside.

In these times when the demand for support cards is high, Greer has found herself a good way of business.
