Introduction to Hurricane Beryl
Hurricane Beryl met land on the Matagorda Peninsula, around 85 miles west of Houston as a category 1 storm. This eventually led to “unleashing a barrage of severe weather as it moved inland before weakening into a tropical storm” capable of widespread damage. Just a week earlier, Beryl completely destroyed multiple Caribbean islands, leaving at least 11 people dead and damaging much infrastructure.
Reported Deaths
As of 10 A.M. CT, the National Hurricane Center downgraded Hurricane Beryl intothe tropical storm category. Damaging winds and flash floods will continue as Beryl pushes farther inland. So far, at least 2 people have been reported dead.
Power Outages
Based on estimates from PowerOutage.us and CenterPoint Energy: “Hurricane Beryl has knocked out power for more than 2.3 million Texas customers, as of 10:27 a.m. Monday,” (Texas Tribune, 2024) CenterPoint also noted on social media platform X that their crews would start to head out to assess damage and develop restoration planes when it’s safe According to CenterPoint Energy, there are 4,801 active outages and 1,147 outages were restored in the last 24 hours. Citizens in Houston are warned not to drive for their safety. Roads are currently being monitored during the storm.
Beryl’s Progress
“Hurricane Beryl is expected to weaken as it moves further inland: first into a tropical storm and then a tropical depression.” (USA Today, 2024) Beryl is expected to dissipate either this Tuesday or Wednesday.
