Do you like to eat ice cream as a yummy dessert? I like it a lot. In fact, Ronald Reagan, the 40th president, declared July National Ice Cream Month, and the third Sunday of July National Ice Cream Day in 1984.
People have been enjoying icy treats for centuries. In the 9th century, clever people in the Arab world figured out how to combine milk, sugar, and maybe some fruit to make a creamy, frozen dessert. This yummy invention eventually reached Europe in the 16th century, but it wasn’t until the 1700s that ice cream arrived in America.
Today, America is the world’s biggest ice cream fan, eating an average of 20 pounds per person each year. That’s a lot of scoops! Speaking of scoops, there are over 1,000 flavors out there, from classic vanilla and chocolate to more adventurous options like mint chocolate chip and cookies & cream. Believe it or not, some flavors recorded to have been made in the past are Parmesan cheese and ginger!
Have you ever wondered how much ice cream someone could eat in 30 seconds? In 2023, someone in Germany devoured a whopping 1.25 pounds in the timeframe! And if balancing skills are your thing, someone in Italy once stacked a mind-blowing 125 scoops on a single cone!
So next time you dig into a bowl of ice cream, remember, it’s not just yummy—it’s super cool, too! It’s been around for ages, with people creating amazing flavors. Plus, it’s inspired some record-breaking moments. So go ahead, grab your spoon and celebrate National Ice Cream Month!
