Ice Cream Month

By: Ethan Tong

The 40th president, Ronald Regan, was famous for liking jelly beans. But he was also well-known for loving ice cream. Then as president, he made the month of July Ice Cream Month in 1984, and the third Sunday is Ice Cream Day.

The point of Ice Cream Month is to eat as much ice cream as you possibly can. The first ice cream was created in the 16th century. However, the United States did not know about ice cream until 1774 when Maryland Governor Thomas Bladen served it to guests.

The first ice cream flavor was Aspergers: grated cheese, and bread crumbs. Almost $6 billion is spent on ice cream and Americans eat 20 pounds on average each year.

The five most favorite ice cream flavors are vanilla, mint chocolate chip, chocolate, oreo cookies and cream, and finally pralines and cream. But the most favorite out of all of those flavors in the United States is vanilla.

Founder of the Smell & Taste, Dr. Alan Hirsch, believes that your favorite ice cream flavor reflects your personality. This can be proven because vanilla lovers are supposed to be impulsive, but the people who love chocolate are lively, charming, and sometimes a bit dramatic. Also, strawberry’s personality is supposed to be an introvert, and mint chocolate chip lovers are supposed to be cautious.

There are also world records for who can hold the most ice cream scoops on one cone. One held 123, another held 83, and somebody else held 125 scoops on one cone. The person who held 125 scoops was called Dimitri Panciria.
