On May 29, 2023, the closing pitcher for the Chicago White Sox MLB team, Liam Hendriks, for his first MLB game since he beat cancer. Tens of thousands of fans cheered for him as he took the mound.
Hendriks had been diagnosed with stage-4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but kept his body moving during treatment and was able to quickly come back to the MLB a month after his last treatment.
Though he had a 10.80 ERA with the Minor League Charlotte Knights AAA team for his rehab assignment, his first four games went swiftly, with a 2.95 ERA. Today, he has a 5.40 ERA and made the All-Star Game.
Beyond the baseball diamond, Hendriks helps people with cancer and has collaborated with MLB player Carlos Carrasco, who also had cancer, to help patients with pediatric cancer.
He shares his stories to this day and portrays with everyone that there is still hope, even if you have a life-threatening disease.
