India Attempts to Revive Cheetahs from Extinction

By: JJ G

Project Cheetah’s goal is to build up a population of 40 cheetahs.70 years ago, cheetahs died out in India. Currently, Project Cheetah are still trying to bring cheetahs back to India. Last Saturday Namibia’s government released eight cheetahs, for a gift, to Kuno National Park. The cheetahs were raised by the Cheetah Conservation Fund. The cheetahs were chosen because they were good hunters and they were used to being close to humans.

In 1952, Asian cheetahs were declared extinct after being overhunted by poachers. The reason might have been because humans took over, or they were hunted for their skins.

The cheetahs were not Asian cheetahs but African cheetahs. To make sure they do not get hurt or die the cheetahs are staying in an enclosed area for the next month. However, there are still hyenas and leopards in the area, and experts are worried that the cheetahs may not have enough food. A second group of cheetahs is getting ready to go to India and the cheetahs should arrive in October.

Before Project Cheetah was approved, the enclosure was going to be for lions.
