Is California Doing Enough Coronavirus Testing?

By: Alina Dang

To the Editor:

Compared to some other states in the U.S.A, California is definitely behind in the amount of testing for the coronavirus. Harvard has set targets for all the states and California is one out of 34 states that do not reach the target. However, California is the third largest state in the United States of America, so it is much harder to test more people, nonetheless, California should still increase the amount of testing.

The coronavirus is spreading all over the United States. California alone has 366,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with a death toll of 7,503. Over the last two weeks, 7.4 percent of the 100,000 tests have come back positive. More testing will help the residents be more careful and cautious. Harvard has set a goal and California has only reached one-third of it.

In order to slow the spread of the virus, California would have to isolate the infected. However, the amount of testing must increase to find more cases. The more testing there is, the more people with the virus can be isolated. Only then will California be safe to reopen.
