Is Cutting a Whole Team Just?

By: Jaden Sun

Is cutting a whole team right just because they messed up a season? Most people would say no. They might add that it’s insane to cut an entire volleyball team. But this is what coach Chelsey Lucas did. To the average person, this is outrageous, as a person who understands why she did it, allow me to give you, my opinion.

Grambling State, the college where Chelsey Lucas was working, didn’t do too well last season. The team only had 11 wins in contrast to the 17 losses. This is why I believe Lucas cut the whole team. She needed to rely on the team to earn money, her life literally depended on the team, and with a lousy team, her lifestyle was at risk.

Now cutting the whole team isn’t right, people think that she acted too rashly. However, I think you are the one acting irrationally. If we come into detail, according to KSLA, she was their coach for one month. That means she had one whole month to decide to cut the whole team. Although the team claimed that the coach cut the players because she believed they had insulted her, logic would disagree. She cut the team because the team was less than ideal as it didn’t fit her expectations. I think that is a good chunk of time, and a good reason to cut an entire team.

Currently, coach Lucas is receiving a ton of backlash from the volleyball community as she had also been recently fired. However, I believe that we have to give her a second chance.
