Jaren Jackson Jr., a power forward for the Memphis Grizzlies with several years of NBA experience, is making a name for himself on and off the basketball court. Recently, he was elected vice president of the NBPA, continuing a family legacy of union involvement. Jaren’s mother, Terri Jackson, serves as the executive director of the WNBPA, and his father, Jaren Jackson Sr., was a member of the NBA players’ union during his career.
Jackson Jr.’s journey to the NBPA leadership began during the union’s winter meeting, when he gave an impromptu speech expressing his desire to bridge the gap between established players and the younger generation. His dedication and maturity impressed his mother, although she held back her excitement to avoid embarrassing her 23-year-old son. However, as he was elected, Jackson couldn’t contain her joy and celebrated the accomplishment.
Beyond his achievements on the court, including being named the NBA’s defensive player of the year, Jackson Jr. understands the importance of participating actively in union activities. He believes in laying a strong foundation for future players and ensuring their well-being in the league.
Jackson Jr.’s interest in labor issues can be traced back to his birth during the NBA lockout in 1999. Born during the NBA lockout in 1999, Jackson Jr. was exposed to the impact of labor negotiations early because his father was involved in union meetings.
As Jackson Jr. continues to excel in his basketball career and takes on the responsibilities of his union role, he aims to contribute to collective bargaining efforts and support his fellow players. With the guidance of veteran union leaders and the unwavering support of his parents, he is ready to embrace his position as a union vice president while also making his mark on the court.
Despite the challenges that come with the role, Jackson Jr. is committed to advocating for the well-being of his fellow players, embodying the values instilled in him by his family. Through his dedication to the union and his exceptional skills on the court, Jaren Jackson Jr. is proving to be a force to be reckoned with both on and off the basketball court.
