Joe Davis, a sports commentator, will soon be getting the job of his dreams— replacing Joe Buck on Major League Baseball on FOX World Series. Davis has been preparing for this opportunity, watching many baseball broadcasts and taking notes on the commentators’ words. Since 2016, after replacing Vin Scully, Davis has been a commentator for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He admires many sports broadcasters including Buck, who, Davis said, was always ready for whatever mishaps, and speaks as though nothing he says sounds written.
When Davis came into the field, many people noticed his natural talent. Brad Zager, a Fox sports executive, noticed that Davis wasn’t over-talking like most other broadcasters.
Davis has been interested in broadcasting from a young age. As a boy, he often accompanied his father to work; his dad was the voice of St. Louis Cardinals and a high school football coach. As a young man, Davis applied to Beloit College in Wisconsin and was accepted.
There, Davis practiced with an acting coach and recorded himself in his dorm, perfecting the art of sports commentating. During college, he got jobs as the voice of the Schaumburg Flyers, an independent professional baseball team, and as a commentator for the Montgomery Biscuits, a Minor-League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team. In 2012, Davis got a job at ESPN, and two years later he switched to Fox, then to the Dodgers in 2016.
Now Davis is married with three kids and he is the new voice of baseball.
